LWSF strives to remove barriers by providing scholarships to select graduating seniors from the Students of Color Conference—an empowering event designed for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) high school students in the Lake Washington School District (LWSD).
These scholarships help students pursue a variety of post-secondary opportunities, including four-year universities, community colleges, technical training programs, and vocational schools. By reducing financial barriers, these scholarships empower students to follow their chosen career paths, whether that’s furthering their education, developing specialized skills, or entering the workforce with confidence and preparation.
We are grateful to Ben and Nancy Remak, longstanding donors of LWSF, for their generous contributions to make these impactful scholarships possible.
About the Students of Color Conference
LWSD’s Students of Color Conference aims to uplift historically marginalized communities by strengthening students’ identity development, social justice awareness, and personal growth. Through Dr. Tara J. Yosso’s “Cultural Capitals,” students explore key aspects of cultural wealth, including aspirational, linguistic, and social capital.
Hosted at Cascadia College in Bothell, the conference features:
- Resource Fair: Connecting students with community resources.
- Workshops: Dynamic sessions covering topics from creative expression to DJing, with some offered in Spanish and Portuguese.
- Affinity Spaces: Racial and ethnic identity groups foster community connection.
- Student Performances: A showcase of student talent.
“The Students of Color Conference offers students a window into a successful, purpose-driven future”
– Pablo Ortega, LWSD’s Director of Equity & Family Engagement
